Principal's Note - May 23, 2021

Principal's Note
May 24, 2021

Good morning, Holmes Families!

I hope that you have enjoyed the weekend.  Between the warmer temperatures, the cicadas emerging, and the pools opening in a week, it feels like summer has already arrived!  Just 3 more weeks to go in the 2020-21 school year.

Last PTA Meeting of the Year

Our last PTA meeting of the year will be this week on Wednesday, May 26th at 7:00 pm at this Zoom link.  We will elect the PTA Board for the 2021-22 school year and share updates about the 8th grade celebration on Friday, June 11th.

Honors Courses at Holmes MS

On Friday, I sent information to the families of current Holmes students and to families of rising 6th graders about our plan for Honors coursework beginning in the 2021-22 school year.  This information is now posted HERE to our website, which can be translated into multiple languages (just click on the flags in the top right corner).  The dates for our follow-up parent sessions next week are below and can be accessed using this link:

SOL Testing - Wrapping up

Our initial round of SOL testing is complete!  This week will be devoted to makeups for students who missed their reading, Science, or Math SOLs.

We have asked teachers to hold off on providing SOL scores to students.  In a typical year, the teacher of the course with the SOL would communicate the score to students.  Since this is an unusual year, though, we would like for parents/guardians to see the scores first and decide if they would like for the school to communicate the score.

The only exception to that will be for students who are eligible for retakes.  The only retakes available this year are for students who scored 350-399 on the Algebra or Geometry SOL.  Teachers will work with students to remediate with them and retakes will be taken on 5/26 and 5/27.

If you have any questions about your student(s) and their SOL tests, please feel free to reach out to our testing coordinator, Mr. Kamar, at @email.

Student Application for Virtual Enrollment, Based on Health Needs, Due May 28

If your child is currently attending school virtually and you would like for them to remain virtual due to their documented health or medical needs for the 2021-22 school year, the deadline to submit the COVID-19 Health Eligibility Form and the Virtual Enrollment Application is Friday, May 28, which is one week later than the original deadline of May 21. Please be aware that the medical need must be based upon the student, not a sibling’s or a family member’s health condition.

All parents of virtual students were sent a letter on May 17 with information on how to apply

Tune Into This Year's 6th Grade All-County Choral Festival

Fairfax County Public Schools and the Fairfax General Music Educators Association announced that the 6th Grade All-County Choral Festival will be held in a virtual format this year. The concert, which includes selected 6th grade students from schools across the division, will air at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, on Red Apple 21 (available via cable providers Cox, Verizon and Comcast) and streaming online on the FCPS website.

Emergency Broadband Benefit Available for Families

The Federal Communications Commission has launched a temporary program to help families and households struggling to afford Internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Emergency Broadband Benefit provides a discount of up to $50 per month toward broadband service for eligible households. Eligible families can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. This is not an FCPS-funded program. It is a way for families to potentially access a more reliable hard-wired internet connection at a higher bandwidth than the “basic” packages provide.

Eligible households can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) using an online or mail in application.

Learn about the benefit, including eligibility and enrollment information, by visiting www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit, or by calling 833-511-0311.

Updates to Family Life Education Instructional Content Now Available for Public Review

Recommended Family Life Education (FLE) materials (media and lesson objectives) to support instruction are available for community review until Monday, June 7, at 4:30 p.m. Recommendations affect grades K, 1, 7, 8, 10, modified 1-6, and modified 7-12.

Important Immunization Requirement: Do You Have a Student Entering Seventh Grade or Twelfth Grade This Fall?

While the COVID-19 vaccination is NOT required by schools for the 2021-22 school year, many other vaccinations are.

Seventh-grade students need:

  • One dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) given at age 7 or older.
  • One dose of Meningococcal Vaccine (MenACWY, Menactra, or Menveo) given at age 10 or older.

Twelfth-grade students need:

  • One dose of Meningococcal Vaccine (MenACWY, Menactra, or Menveo) given at age 16 or older.

More information on new immunization requirements is available online

COVID Recovery Services Available for Special Education Students

Special education COVID recovery services may be considered for any student with a disability whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team or Section 504 Committee determines there remains a significant educational impact due to the COVID-19 school closure and the virtual learning this school year. Recovery services are designed to address learning gaps and are determined by IEP Teams or 504 Committees.

Not all students with disabilities will require COVID recovery services. COVID recovery services are based on whether or not the student continued making progress in the general education curriculum, or alternative course of study specified in their IEP/504 plan or toward meeting their IEP goals, and/or if any significant regression occurred during the period of school closure.

IEP Teams and 504 Committees will use a variety of data sources including individual student progress data, teacher assessments, and parent input when considering COVID recovery services. If the IEP Team or 504 Committee decides a student requires recovery services, the team will determine the amount and type of recovery service that is required to address the individual student’s needs.

If you think that your child may require COVID recovery services, please contact your child’s IEP/504 case manager to further discuss and schedule a meeting for the IEP team or 504 committee to consider the need for recovery services.
