Principal's Note - Nov. 4, 2022
Good afternoon, Holmes Families!
We had a great and peaceful week at Holmes this week. I have appreciated the conversations with families, students, and staff this past week as we plan how to move forward and best support the needs that we are seeing with our students. The beautiful thing is the vast majority of our students are doing exactly what they are supposed to do to keep themselves and each other safe, and that makes a positive difference.
Thank you to the families who were able to attend our parent coffee yesterday! If you were not able to attend, a voiceover of the slides is here: https://tinyurl.com/holmesnovparentcoffee. Our next parent coffee will be at 9 am on Wednesday, December 7th.
We have a time-change this weekend and a 3-day week next week. Here's what's coming up:
Daylight Savings Time Ends
Daylight savings time will end this Sunday, November 6, at 2 a.m. Don’t forget to move your clocks back one hour!
Election Day, 11/8 - STUDENT & STAFF HOLIDAY
Don’t forget to get out and vote on Tuesday, November 8! The day will be observed as a holiday for students and teachers. For more information, visit the Virginia Department of Elections website.
Veterans Day, 11/11 - STUDENT HOLIDAY
As a reminder, Friday, November 11, is a student holiday/school planning day for the Veterans Day holiday. Veterans Day is a time to pause, reflect, and recognize the extraordinary sacrifices our veterans and their families have made on our behalf. We thank them for their service. Learn about the history of Veterans Day.
We want to celebrate the veterans in our community! If someone in your household is a veteran, please share it with us on this form.
November Is Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions recognized by FCPS.
Signs of Suicide Program for Students in Grade 7
The week of November 14th, seventh graders will participate in the Signs of Suicide program. This program teaches students about the difficult topic of suicide and encourages them to seek help for themselves or a friend. We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. You can also view this parent video to learn more.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in this program please contact Bessie Fealey at @email. If you do not want your child to participate, please fill out this form (Spanish version) no later than Friday, November 11, 2022.

Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes
The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.
The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.
Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.
Learn more about the recommended changes on our website. The public feedback form will be available on our website and will be open October 31 through December 1.
